Jorge Mardones Sánchez

Senior Researcher at the Center for Harmful Algae Studies (CREAN) of the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP) Marine Biologist from the Austral University of Chile and Doctor in Marine Microbiology from the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) of the University of Tasmania, Australia.

His main area of research is Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs.) He has specialized in the study of the ecology of toxic microalgae including life cycles, photosynthetic pigments and production of known phycotoxins and their interaction with environmental variables. His research includes the study of cytotoxins capable of generating massive mortalities of marine organisms through the in vitro use of cell lines.

He currently leads a citizen science project “MicroToxMap” for the monitoring of toxic microalgae in southern Chile in collaboration with Stanford University, USA. Within the IDEAL Center, his studies focus on the effect of climate change on the occurrence of toxic microalgae, with an emphasis on emerging species.
