Science

Lines of investigation

The IDEAL Center develops its action through four study groups and an interdisciplinary team (Task Force). All of them work together in two strategic areas: the southern Patagonia of Chile and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Projected changes in the average annual temperature (+2ºC). IPPC source.

Pelagic processes

LINE OF RESEARCH

Atmospheric, hydrological and oceanographic stressors derived from climate change and anthropogenic activity on the ocean and cryosphere will affect the structure and functions of the marine ecosystems of southern southern Patagonia and the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP).

Bioinvasions and endemism

LINE OF RESEARCH

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current and extreme environmental conditions have represented an effective barrier to isolate the biota of different regions of the Southern Ocean.

Biological interactions

LINE OF RESEARCH

Benthic ecosystems throughout the Southern Ocean are characterized by being unique and highly diversified, whose structure and function are being threatened by rapid global change and anthropogenic impact.

Human dimensions

LINE OF RESEARCH

Coastal communities, indigenous peoples and small-scale fishers around the world depend on the ocean for their livelihoods, subsistence, well-being and cultural continuity.

Task Force

INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM

The Task Force is an interdisciplinary group of researchers from the different IDEAL Center work teams who have come together with the mission of addressing interdisciplinary research questions oriented to socio-ecological problems in the Magallanes and Antarctica Regions and providing tools to help decision-making of local actors.
